The Wrap up-5/28/20

Cannabis Sales booming even amid this pandemic

It’s not rocket science,

Big scary invisible virus + Anxious Americans stuck inside = the demand to pay your plugs rent in exchange for weed

Even as restrictions were tight around the world, cannabis sales have surged in places like Oregon.  In April, legal cannabis sales in Oregon exceeded $89 Million which is a downloadrecord for the state. Thats a sharp increase from 2019, a 45% increase or something like 40 mil! Even Canada was getting a piece of the pie.

Canada has also seen a huge spike in sales during this pandemic. In March like many other Americans, Canadians were “panic-buying” weed. Sales increased by about 17% and  went from $151.9 million (in canada) in February  to $181.1 million (in canada).

Here is a breakdown of the sale from Canada’s 4 most populated cities for all the nerds

-Ontario: 21% to CA$47.3 million.

-Quebec: 29% to CA$37.7 million.

-British Columbia: 12% to CA$23.5 million.

-Alberta: 21% to CA$40.4 million.cannabis-shop-in-warsaw

Hopefully this shit encourages other states the legalize the damn plant. It seems to be picking up speed in New York, Pennsylvania, Minnesota. Legalization could definitely be the catalyst that could get alot of these states out of their coronavirus-related debts.

Virgina decriminalizes cannabis

Virginia becomes the 27th state to decriminalize weed this week. Shoutout to my mans Gov. Ralph Northam. I gotta bring up this photo everytime I hear his name. 190203072700-northam-presser-yearbook-splitThe Law goes into order on July 1st. The new law allows citizens caught with an ounce or less to be subject to a fine of no more than $25 and no jail time. The law also states that possesion of low amounts of weed won’t go on a person’s criminal record and records relating to arrests, charges, and convictions for marijuana possession will be sealed “except in certain circumstances.” What are the certain circumstances you may ask? I imagine it involves any form of minorities caught with posession of cannabis. I trust Gov. Northam will make the correct decisions just due to the fact of his past.

Accidental ABDs

This is more of a pre-Instagram era topic or rather, it actually meant something back then.

An “accidental ABD” is pretty self-explanatory. It’s when two skaters do the same trick at the same spot by accident. It’s a cool concept just because it was much harder to know who did what first just because full-length videos took like 5 fuckin years to make. The principles of ABDs and NBDs remind me of the saying from George Berkley :

“If a tree falls in a forest and nobody is there to hear it, does it make a sound?”

the saying is a bit outdated. We are skaters so we obviously don’t give a shit about trees. I would change the saying to

” If a skater gets a clip in the streets and he doesn’t post it to Instagram, did it really happen?”

This type of thing makes you realize how important filmers/ editors and photographers are. Without them, skateboarding would be based on hearsay and myths. Basically, it would be the equivalent of Christianity but instead of Jesus Christ and God and shit, we have Mark Gonzales and Rodney Mullen.

Since everyone knows who’s done what at whatever spot on the planet (or at least California), you don’t see too many accidental ABDs. Another reason could be the fact that the bar has been raised like 100 times over the last few years so people stopped giving a shit about ABDs.

So I decided to give myself a “reason” to watch skate videos and find 10 of my favorite accidental ABDs.

Tony Fergusson- Girl, Mouse and Guy Mariano – Girl, Mouse

Switch Varial Heel

Same trick, same spot, same video, maybe even the same day?!  It kinda looks like Tony’s was done earlier in the day though. What makes it weird is that Tony’s clip is an ender and Guy’s clip is in the middle of the part. Kinda shows how crazy Guy Mariano was back then.

Andrew Reynolds- Baker, Baker 3 and Tony Cervantes- Zero, New Blood

Nollie flip the Hollywood High 12

(S/O to Derrick Gerlach for this one)

First things first, who the fuck is Nollie flipping 12 stairs these days? Hollywood High will always be the spot where any trick done down it is a testament to how far skating has come. Also, it says plenty about how gnarly skating was back in the early 2000s.

Some cool background info about this is that they were apparently done in the same week in 2005! Reynolds did it first but it’s crazy to think that Tony was AM when this came out. Really proving he can hang with the big dogs!

Andrew Reynolds- Baker, Baker 3 and Chris Cole- Zero, New Blood

Bs flip Sw Manual sw 180 out

Reynolds again? This is a weird one to me because it’s a not simple manual trick. Like at all. This is the kinda shit I’m talking about, like how does that happen. I guess when you get two of the best skaters out at the same spots, it’s bound to happen

Mark Suciu- Habitat, Habitat Origin and Ben Gore- Welcome to M.I.A.

Gap to Back lip

This one stood out to me because of how this is another trick that requires finesse and not everyone can make it look good. 2 things Mark Suciu has no problem achieving. Plus that fakie front blunt was letting people know he’s the best.

It’s also pretty cool how they both got double angles

Bobby Puleo- Static 2 and Daniel “Snowy” Kinloch-Landscape, Portraits

Ollie up, Nollie 360

Both of these skaters are probably not on your radar,( unless you are an old head, at that point I would just like to congratulate you on being alive this long) but these clips were too cool to pass up. You have to take into consideration that New York doesn’t really have spots. Their idea of a spot might be a dirty water puddle, a rectangular patch of new asphalt on a street, a trashcan or whatever the hell this is?

Furby- Supra web edit and Tom Asta- Zero, Strange world

Nollie BS Heelflip the Hollywood High 12

Yall remember Furby? Latino Antwan Dixon? I wonder what happened to him?

Anyways, Tom Asta did this one like 5+ years before Tom Asta did it. I wonder if Furby knew that Tom Asta did it. I’d like to think that Furby saw the footage and said “Nah fuck that, hold this clip”

Forrest Edwards- Wild Power and Pricilliano Alvarez- MOOD:

Switch 50-50

I saw this one recently and had to include some local legends. These clips are crazy because only a small percentage of skaters have the chops to do switch front 50s on roundbars.

Chad Tim-Tim- Element, This is my element and Chad Tim-Tim – Dekline, True Blue

Sw Bs 5-0 Sw 360 shove out

Okay okay I know I said accidental but I had to include this one. I like when skaters go back to old spots and outdo themselves. Plus I don’t think I’ve ever seen Sw Bs 5-0 Sw 360 shove ever. Shout out to Tim Chad-Chad

Na-kel Smith and Christian Henry- Transworld Checkout

BS Tail Shuv-it

This post kinda made me want to write this article. Na-kel really didn’t know that someone else did it. Now it’s kinda crazy because since so much fucking footage comes out every week, it’s almost like it didn’t happen! I didn’t even know Christian Henry did it, and I don’t really think anyone did.

Shareef Grady and Clint Walker- Birdhouse, Saturdays

Ollie the Wilshire 15 over the barriers

This one was a pretty recent accidental ABD. And I decided to save it for last because of how it really depicts the state of skateboarding. These days you can not be holding on to footage at famous spots for more than a year and a half if you still want it to be relevant. Shit like this will happen. No one even knew that Clint Walker did it first(and apparently had a thrasher cover lined up for it). And Walker was bitchin about it to as if that type of shit doesn’t happen. He was just mad because Shareef’s was cooler anyways.

Remember everyone is good these days and will upload anything to instagram

Comment any Accidental ABDs that I may have missed or confessionals or missed connections ads……

S/O to my guy Fredward for the illustration. Check out his NSFW( or SFW depending where you work I guess) illustrations and his clips on his IG @notmuchelsetodo

InActive Rideshop

Active Ride shop becomes inactive and has closed its doors last month. For most of the skate community their closing may have come as a shock, a slap in the face almost.  There had been rumors going around for about a year prior but it was all speculation. I assumed it was because they couldn’t sell all of the pickle rick merch from last year or possibly too many insta-baddies who don’t know what thunder trucks are (lookin at you Redlands).

I decided to ask some of the homies active Redlands and see what they had to say about it..

Casey Frey20200210_121342.jpg

My first question would be what was your position at active and how long have you been working there?

I was a store manager for Redlands and Rancho for about 5 and a half years.

So how exactly did the company go out of business? I heard something about a bad loan.

Our company’s financial records have not been the greatest in recent years. Online shopping is making it increasingly difficult for all retailers to keep their doors open. Our new CEO was supposed to lead us to a stable business but failed incredibly bad. Active will be auctioned off Jan. 25th (I believe) to hopefully be purchased by anyone else besides our CEO.

So do you think that the company could possibly come back?

There is a small possibility. Not under the current CEO. Hopefully, there’s a couple of old Active heads trying to lift it up again and outbid the Jon (current ceo)

How was the last day?

The last day was terrible. 1st time in my life I ever had to do it. They only gave us a 3-day notice so we didn’t have time to plan much. active_SaleBut I have to say we had a fuckkn rager one of the nights and if you were there you won’t ever forget it haha

And what do you think shops can do to stay afloat even when a chain like active closes down?

Not sell to a fuckin corporation that has nothing to do with the skate industry. Active blew it when we let these shitty investors start taking over. And trust me when I say no one wanted it besides a select few. Skate shops need to stick to core skateboarding. That’s it. If you support the industry, you’ll have the support of the people in it. There are only a select few shops that are doing it right and I back it.

Amazing Advice! Which shop do you think is killing it rn?
Programme is one of the rarest shops out there. Straight skate and Records. They have crazy ass shows in their store and it’s always been a personal favorite of mine. That’s what the core skate culture used to be.. fuck all this hype brand bullshit and looking like a pretty boy.. kids are too worried about making skatepark edits while wearing some Gucci shit and supporting brands that don’t support skateboarding..

Did the Heineken board have anything to do with the company going bankrupt in the past?

Naw the Heineken board was just a play off graphic. Active’s done a bunch of quick release graphics that have actually done pretty well.

Did you have anything planned for another job?

Right now I’m just taking it one day at a time. Skating, drinking, writing music and drawing. All these things have been my passion for years, I finally have time to do all of them so I’m embracing it. But I have been thinking about the next step.. and that might be opening up my own shop. We’ll just have to wait and see tho.

In addition I wanted to get some more intel from the shop workers and shop riders perspective, the people that gave the shop it’s “cool” vibe that almost made it feel like real20200209_111930.jpg skateshop. Josh Thrower gave me the rundown of what been going on the last few months.

It’s sad to see a company with that many loyal workers and even more loyal customers just sell the fuck out and shit on their whole community. Now I wasn’t the biggest fan of active but I have made so many memories over the years. I remember the time I broke my truck skating to work( fuck ventures) and I had to get a new set of trucks and the active shop worker helped me put on trucks asap and I was able to make it to work only a few mins late. Or the time I got high as shit and watched skate videos in the Rancho shop for hours with some of the skaters I looked up to. There was also the time at the Active X Skate Mental/3D demo when Brian Anderson(before I knew who he was) shoulder checked me but made sure I was good. Trevor Colden even gave me some props for landing a trick that day. Shit like that is memorable and stays with you forever.

20200209_111908.jpg

All I can say is Rhythm Skateshop is open, go buy all your shit from there, support your local shops and I hope you guys used all of you active bucks!

I decided to have some people say a few words

DISSECTING: California Governor’s marijuana regulation and tax proposal for 2020-21

….the states’ system of renewing is so fucking slow. The way I imagine it is that the regulators basically took the wild 1000 mg edible, looked at all the licenses and said: ” fuck this shit, Imma go watch The Office”.

project_20200127_233650This week California Governor Gavin Newsom and his administration presented the 2020-21 budget proposal. With a budget of 222 billion dollars, the governor proposed plans to fund renewable energy technology, steps to take in the fight against the homelessness epidemic and a statewide ban on the movie Cats due to increasing reports of traumatization.

Governor Newsom then got to his plans to help the marijuana industry run “smoother and safer” His words, not mine. While he proposed things like raising taxes, somehow lowering taxes, and using taxes to fund other state programs and shit like that, his most notable proposal is the plan to create one agency that’s going to take care of cannabis licensing and enforcement: The Department. of Cannabis Control. The current system we use relies on 3 different agencies; Bureau of Cannabis Control, Department of Food and Agriculture, and Department of Public Health.

Governor Newsom’s proposal for one agency will not only make it easier for people to get licenses but also make it easier for people to renew their licenses.gavnew1  That was a major problem for farmers in the past few years, the states’ system of renewing is so fucking slow. The way I imagine it is that the regulators basically took the wild 1000 mg edible, looked at all the licenses and said: ” fuck this shit, Imma go watch The Office”. The state’s plan of giving out temporary licenses for farmers awaiting their provisional and permanent licenses backfired on them. They were handing them out quickly and with no regard for what may happen. They are straight-up ripping a page out of America’s playbook on air strikes.  Almost 6,700 licenses expired in November of 2019. The state also suspended about 385 licenses for not switching to the METRC, a track and trace system that follows each and every newborn ounce from birth to adoption. I’m hoping that the regulators really understand why the black market is so big. The legal market’s overly-complicated application process, slow ass renewal process, and tax gouging basically allow the black market to come into the legal market’s home and dick-down the legal market’s wife.

There’s a metaphor there.

If you’ve ever been on Weedmaps, you may have said something along the lines of , “Oh this is cool!”, and then after seeing prices “what the fuck” which usually leads to you just hitting up “Yo, you on deck?”.  The taxes placed on cannabis is kind of insulting.Screenshot 2020-01-29 at 23.13.42 If you live in  Los Angeles and look on weed maps it’s not uncommon to see 1/8ths priced for $50 and ounces for around $300. However, if you go on weedmaps and set your location to Bend, Oregon, you can clearly see how California is playing us.  The normal price for an 1/8th is around  $30 and about $200 for an ounce. Prices like that make you consider asking your boss if you can take a small vacation to go deal with “family issues” in Portland.

There are a few reasons why legal cannabis prices in California are so damn high. First off, if you live in Long Beach, state and local taxes already add up to 10.25%. You might think you’re chillin after that but then they bitch-slap you with that 15% excise tax. Then they hit you with that marijuana cultivation tax and finally uppercut you with quality control fee that companies just pass onto the consumer price. Then you dust yourself off and make another call to the plug.pot It seems like regulators want you to. An ounce that may have priced at $200 now costs around $300 due to tax rates upwards of 30%. That’s why many dispensary shop owners feel cheated, they are losing sales due to the unbeatable prices of the local plug, Julio.

Here’s a rundown of the marijuana-related proposals that Governor Newsom and his administration presented this week.

  • $60.3 million from Cannabis fund to fund subsidized child care
  • The Bureau of Cannabis Control, The Department of Public Health, and The Department of Food and Agriculture are going to replaced by one agency; Department of Cannabis Control by July of 2021
  • After taxes are used for running the incorrectly ran administration and working on legalization and criminal reform, they estimate that the administration will have about $322.8 million available for things such as-Clean up, remediation and enforcement of environmental impacts that stems from illegal cannabis cultivation- 20%(66.6 mil)-Education, prevention,  treatment of youth substance abuse, and school rentention- 60%($199.7 mil)-Public Safety-related activities- 20%($66.6 mil)
  • increases in tax on medical and adult-use cannabis
  • talks of decreasing taxes on cannabis
  • increases on the cultivation tax: $9.65/oz of flower, $2.89/oz of trim, $1.35/oz of fresh cannabis plant

We need the Golden State can start providing golden opportunities for its fairly new legal market. With the black market sales exceeding way past the legal market sales, I hope regulators figure out the obvious issue and pass regulations to fix it.

Ya know, before its too late

Pennsylvania’s new state legalization bill

It looks like Pennsylvania is making some noise in the industry with its new senate bill to legalize cannabis recreationally. If legalized PA would become the 11th state to fully legalize cannabis. Introduced by Sen. Sharif Street (D-Philly) and Sen, Daylin Leach (D-Montgomery) the bill has been dubbed as the “gold standard” legalization bill for the free world. The issue was so important that Governor Tom Wolf and Lt. Gov. John Fetterman(who looks like the character “Luther” that Kegan-Micheal Key portrayed at the 2015 White House correspondents dinner) hosted a 3-month state-wide listening tour to personally gather information on whether Pennsylvanians are ready for legalization.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Some of the main pieces of this bill are;  immediate expungement of all cannabis-related convictions, allowing for cannabis lounges in the state and a mass improvement on Home-grow laws.

DO NOT PASS GO, DO NOT COLLECT $200

Now before you get all happy and start smoking your dirt weed in public, you should know that Pennslyvania is still CONSIDERING legalization. So there are still some hurdles to get over before it gets voted into law. Even though Gov. Tom Wolf says he is in favor of legalizing cannabis, there is no support coming from the Republican lawmakers (no surprise there). The Republicans are not only worried about the safety of their baby lungs, they are also afraid of what legalization may do to their 2nd Amendment rights.

weedinpa4

Since cannabis is still a federally scheduled narcotic it means that it is illegal to have weed and protect it with a firearm. In the first-ever hearing on recreational cannabis in PA, the conversation was mostly about the rights of every gun owner in the state. I mean sure 66% of the city supports legalization but you won’t be silencing the 27% of Pennsylvanians that are packing heat. Let us not forget, this is the same state with the “rod of iron church”. You know, the church where everyone just wears bullet crowns and have their AR-15s out during prayer. If a church in PA gives couples the opportunity to just “accidentally” shoot their spouse at their own wedding vow renewal, I doubt, they will be changing gun laws anytime soon. So unfortunately many Pennslyvanians have to choose between the two.

What do you mean only 7 grams?

Another issue that PA is currently dealing with is the medical marijuana drought that has been happening since July.  Even though there is are a growing number of medical patients, there seems to be a shortage of cannabis due to there only being 10 licensed cultivators in the whole state.

Marijuana Los Angeles

As if that wasn’t already bad, the regulation process is a bitch. It’s very time consuming and it doesn’t keep up with the demand of the new market. Luckily, the Department of Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine says that it’s a goal in the future to increase the number of growers/processors in the state. Until that happens, dispensaries in cities like Philadelphia have been forced to ration their supply (like it’s 1918) and have been restricting medical patients to 7 grams up to 14 grams if it is even available.

Every Narc’s wet dream

Another issue I have to mention is the Weed breathalyzer, every Narc’s wet dream. Some haters at the University of Pittsbittsburgh created a prototype recently and the damn thing works just like a regular breathalyzer but now it also checks for THC residue from your mouth. The good news is that it has a long way before it can become a reliable tool for local police and your average construction site managers.weedinpa5 Unlike Alcohol, there isn’t an accurate way to detect the level of how fucking “smacked” you are. There isn’t even an agreed-upon blood thc concentration limit so it, unfortunately, makes the rules arbitrary and leaves room for bias and unlawful convictions based on the fact that you still have THC in your system. I’m sure as more research is done, we will actually have an accurate THC breathalyzer and I’m sure I’ll be getting a DUI sometime afterward.

I’m sure this would put republicans on the fence with passing marijuana laws. Just for the simple fact that legalizing cannabis laws will likely add more high drivers on their roads but they would finally have a tool that can detect if someone is driving under the influence.

These pressing issues alone may set back Pennsylvania’s plan to quickly pass Marijuana legalization laws. However, the state still does have a chance next year with the elections because the whole state’s house of representatives will be up for grabs, as well as half of the senate seats. If they were to win a majority in both, they have a better chance of passing legalization laws in 2020.

What is in the bill?

If the bill were put in to effect as is, the Department of Agriculture would allow for:

Homegrow: Individuals would be allowed to cultivate 10 plants. That’s more than any other legal state. Homegrowers keep it for personal use or give it away but would be prohibited from selling it. Annual permit: $50.

Microgrowers: Small businesses would be allowed to grow up to 150 cannabis plants to sell to processors and dispensaries. Microgrowers wouldn’t be able to use the product themselves or sell directly to consumers. Annual permit: $250.

Dispensaries: Current medical marijuana dispensaries would be able to sell recreational weed as long as they kept their inventory and supply chains separate. There would be no cap on the number of potential retailers but ownership would be limited to three storefronts. Dispensaries would be allowed to hold permits to deliver cannabis and open a lounge where people could consume marijuana. To ensure safety of the products, dispensaries would be held liable “for civil treble damages” for harm caused by inaccurate labeling of sold cannabis. Permit: $5,000.

Bigger growers: So-called Big Marijuana would be kept in check. Permits would allow for no more than 150,000 square feet of outdoor weed farming or 60,000 square feet under indoor lights. There would be no limit on total number of growers, but each grower would be limited to an ownership stake in only one grow facility. Application would cost $100,000, annual renewal would cost $10,000.

Processors: Could purchase weed from big growers and microgrowers to render into pills, tinctures, vape cartridges, and concentrates. Permit: $1,000.

Delivery service: To get cannabis from dispensaries to consumers, individuals would be able to deliver by foot, unicycle, bike, automobile, bus, train, or armored car. Dispensary employees or independent contractors could serve as deliverers. Permits: $50.

BYOW lounges: Much like a bar is for alcohol, a public lounge would serve cannabis users and could be owned or attached to dispensaries. Lounge owners could sell admission but not sell product within the lounge premises. Customers required to bring (their) own weed. Most legal states do not offer lounges. Permit: $1,000.

Taxes: Set at 17.5%

Research: Colleges and universities could grow and process cannabis in conjunction with any classes they offer related to the weed industry. All product, however, must be destroyed and not used by any individual. Though the offer is attractive, most schools would be unlikely to participate for fear of being stripped of federal grants.

Social justice, expungement: All criminal convictions for cannabis-related offenses would be removed from a person’s record. Anyone incarcerated on a marijuana-related crime would receive a commutation. All supervision would cease. Pending criminal charges for cannabis would be dismissed.

Social justice, education: The Department of Agriculture would create a network of schools to offer classes for prospective cannabis entrepreneurs.

Social justice, grant program, and loans: Up to $2 million would be available as interest-free loans for low-income people who want to participate in the recreational marijuana industry who have prior cannabis-related criminal convictions.

30 days with: The Yocan Magneto

Now I realize that after I talked shit on everyone’s pesticide cancer carts, I didn’t provide any alternative options besides carts from actual companies with Lab test and ingredient lists. I do understand that some of you are not trying to spend over $45 for quality half gram cartridges. I was in the same predicament as yall like a month ago. What could I find that’s discreet, reliable and wouldn’t make me cry inside while paying for it?

At the time, I was about to go on a skate trip and I didn’t want to get smell like LOUD the whole time so, I needed a new vape pen. A few friends referred me to the Yocan Magneto. Both of them assured me it would be worth the money. At $55, I was sold.

THE FIRST WEEK

Advancements in Stoner Technology

On the first day of my trip, the Magneto was working wonderfully! It produces a nice amount of smoke but it has a metallic taste at first. After the coil was seasoned, it tasted way better! I love the magnetic pieces that just connect together. It’s nice to not have to twist anything back on. The built in twist-off silicone container is a great feature and just makes it that much easier to use the splash cap/ dab tool and just grab your concetrate. The dab tool even magnetically sets in place right above the atomizer and is SUPPOSED TO make the process even easier. I was putting random sized dabs on the Miracle B atomizer and it was vaporizing it and leaving a bit of reclaim on the bottom. At the time I assumed it would get vaporized later and I was way fucking wrong. I just kept putting random sized dabs on the atomizer.

a lil dirty

After about a day and a half later, the coil stopped vaporizing my dabs and the light under the button started blinking. I just assumed that the battery died. After charging the battery for like 3 hours, the fucking atomizer still didn’t work! How dare it disobey it’s master! After an extensive freak-out, I realized I may just need to clean the damn thing. In hindsight, that shit was gunked the fuck up! So a few days later I ended up going to a store and getting 70% Isopopyl Alcohol and just soaked the whole atomizer and in a syrofoam cup. It ended up working and I was able to use it on the rest of my week trip.

The SECOND WEEK

When I got home from my trip, my atomizer stopped working. The weird thing I figured out is that when the light on the battery flashes it could mean 1 of 2 things(maybe both?), either the battery is dead or the atomizer is dead. At first it was confusing like why wouldn’t you just make two lights? Eventually you start to just start to pay attention. Thanks to my local smoke shop Daddy’s Smoke shop, they always have them in stock! Speaking of the battery, this thing lasts a long ass time! I use thing about 5 or 6 times a day taking up to 2-5 dabs. It usually dies on me around 3 days after a full charge!

stupid design

After buying a new coil, I realized that maybe i should use common sense and just pick way smaller dabs. And to nobody’s surprise except mine, it worked. I started just (pre-picking?) dabs and it worked so much better. But the only thing is that the dab tool should not have a little (cup?) for the wax to get stuck in.

1 MONTH

easy Peasy

So after 1 month I have figured out how to properly use this thing and I love it. After almost 3 weeks, I decided to buy a new atomizer. You can only withstand the taste of reclaim for so long. I ended up using the oil splash cap again due to my throat always getting dry. I still say that they should just make the dab tool end flat and just have a small point on the end, it would make more sense. At this point, I just use a tiny dab tool and put it on the atomizer before puting on the splash cap.

FINAL SAY

I think its the best wax pen on the market for it’s price. The atomizer lasts me almost 3 weeks when used properly and consistently gives a nice hit(even if you have BABY LUNGS). The battery last so long which is great for me especially because i always forget to charge it up at home. Overall just an amazing piece of technology. I’ve been telling everyone about this thing and I even got my girl to buy one(she obviously loves it).

I GIVE THE YOCAN MAGNETO

Street Carts: Bad or Terrible?

Ancient Stoner Artifact

For those who consume weed on a daily basis(such as myself), one of my main concerns is being discreet. Ever since my early highschool years that was what everyone wanted. A large part of that meant doing anything we could to hide the smell. Things like bringing an extra shirt for after you smoke, making a smoke filter out of a toilet paper roll and dryer sheets,

always carrying around eyedrops. You know, that high school shit. Since then I have learned about concentrates but they still managed to produce that lovely pugnent smell that my parents hated so much. Then the universe blessed(or cursed) me with the Vape Cartridge.

Vape carts are obviously the easiest and most discreet way to consume cannabis and still get a nice high. Most of them are reliable, odorless, and they last a while (depending on how often you smoke). So it’s a no-brainer why these are becoming so popular. BDS analystics stated that in December of 2018, vape carts had almost 40% of the market share with flower coming in 2nd at 33%. However, discreetness and booming sales doesn’t always mean safe. Thanks to the ruthless black market, people are putting their health in danger.

What’s inside your cart?

As someone who used to constantly buy street carts, I’m surprised I never got seriously sick or hospitalized from hitting them. These days you never know what’s inside them. That’s why new California regulations are requiring companies to do heavy metal testing on their oil and the results aren’t looking good.

Over the past few months labs are finding that many cartridges contain some amount of lead! You don’t have to be a fucking scientist to know any amount of lead can be detrimental to your health. Interestingly enough, the lead isn’t necessarily coming from the production of the oil, but from the cartridge itself. AnalyticalCannibis.com stated that “A significant proportion of the electronics used in vape carts are produced at metal foundries in China, where it is common to add small amounts of lead into the brass and copper feedstocks in order to make the metals more moldable when shaping all types of electronics.” And since these empty vape carts are so cheap and easily accessible, it makes sense why these street plugs just use them for their loyal “custies”. Cheaper on their end but more harmful to the consumer.

What else could be in your oil?

Lead isn’t even the biggest issue with vape cartridges these days. Many of these street cart “brands” don’t really exist. “Brands” such as Mario Carts, Exotic Carts, and Dank Vapes aren’t necessarily real. I feel like if you can buy Dank Vapes packaging online (in bulk) then it’s definitely not a real company. Many of these “brands” exist because of how easily you can buy the packaging online. What all these “custies” don’t know is that these street carts are being filled by some random hustler who has his own oil. And now a days people are adding unnecessary additives to their oil. Things such as Terpene Diluent

Wait, I don’t think this is weed

You may have had one of these street plugs come up to you before, flipping their fucking carts upside down and saying something along the lines of, “Aye homie, you smoke? Yoo I got the fire on deck hit my line! I got that real shit look,  the bubble don’t move! That’s probably not thick distilate. Terpene Diluent is a cutting agent that can be used to cut distillate oil and make it thicker. Terpenes alone are not bad for you but adding cutters to distalllate isn’t necessarily what you want in your cartridges. Other cutters such as VG(Vegetable Glycerin), PEG(polyethylene glycol), and MCT (medium chain triglycerides) are also used in cartridges to make the concentrates less thick and easier to vaporize. Not only are these not something you want in your cartridges, they can potentially create hazardous vapor. Chief Scientist at EVOLAB(a lab that specifically focuses on making cannabis vapor products with only cannabis-derived cutting agents) Dr. Noel Palmer wrote that, “Research has shown that a variety of volatile carbonyls can be formed, including formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acrolein. These specific carbonyl compounds are particularly notable because of their adverse health effects on humans. In fact, acrolein was used as a chemical warfare agent in World War I due to its toxicity.” I thought the point of vape cartridges was to get high not almost fucking die.

It’s up to you though…

At this point, if you aren’t buying from a reliable source, your vape cartridge can be filled with anything. As of recently, I had a friend who got Cookies cartridges from a Sesh near my house and said it didn’t get him high at all. I’ve even heard of people putting actual honey in a vape carts which is just fucked up.

When I say “reliable source” I don’t mean the local street plug that your homies have been hitting up for the past year. I mean a licensed shop or sesh that provides actual info(lab tests and ingredient lists) about what’s inside of it. Companies such as Brite labs are reliable and may charge a bit more but I think it’s worth it if you value your health. But if you don’t value your health, that’s cool too!

It’s all up to you though, what would you rather be smoking on?
